This activity uses clinical cases to address the challenges of clinical inertia when caring for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The discussion of treatment options includes consideration of the progressive nature of diabetes, current treatment guidelines, and interprofessional strategies to improve patient care.

Learning Objectives
  • Identify the current guidelines and the latest evidence for appropriate therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and with or without comorbidities. 
  • Identify patient and provider barriers to overcoming clinical inertia. 
  • Devise interprofessional strategies to maximize patient engagement in developing a diabetes care plan and achieving individualized treatment goals. 
  • Apply and individualize the current treatment guidelines for type 2 diabetes mellitus using patient vignettes.
